Solution based thermochromic doped VO
2
particles has been developed with hydrothermal
synthesis, which is a rapid way to obtain VO
2
in different phases under more economical and
environmentally friendly conditions. Thermochromic doped VO
2
was successfully synthesized by a
chemically optimized hydrothermal process, using V
2
O
5
and oxalic acid as precursors. The obtained
VO
2
is characterized by X-Ray powder diffraction (XRD), Differential Scanning Calorimetry
(DSC), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). We also
demonstrate that the doped VO
2
in the form of a colloidal dispersion can be easily incorporated into
thin plastic thermochromic films that may be used as smart windows for energy saving.
